A transport improvement project to reduce congestion on Stenson Road, Blagreaves Lane and Goodsmoor Road is due to start on Monday 24th July.
Carried out by contractor Whitehouse Consultation Co. Ltd of Ashbourne, the project involves carriageway widening, resurfacing, installation of traffic signal equipment and significant drainage improvements to protect the area from future flooding, and are expected to last up to 18 weeks.
The works are being planned in four main phases, and are expected to last up to 18 weeks. Each phase will be split into smaller working areas to keep disruption to a minimum for both pedestrians and vehicle users. Temporary traffic signals will be used for the majority of the time, and the distance between signal heads will be kept as short as is practical to minimise vehicle queues.
Phase 1: The western side of Stenson Road between Gary Close and 438 Stenson Road.
Phase 2: The eastern side of Stenson Road between 471 Stenson Road and 445 Stenson Road, and also all works on Goodsmoor Road.
Phase 3: The eastern side of Stenson Road between 445 Stenson Road and 431 Stenson Road, just north of Breedon Avenue.
Phase 4: The western side of Stenson Road between 438 Stenson Road and the Fletchers Florist, and also Blagreaves Lane from its junction with Stenson Road to the zebra crossing point.
To allow the contractor to carry out the works safely, Goodsmoor Road will be closed during parts of Phase 1 and 2, although 3-way temporary signals will be used initially.
Breedon Avenue is planned to be closed for approximately two weeks, from 11th September to allow the contractor to make a drainage connection to the existing sewer. Other traffic management measures will mainly comprise of lane closures with 2-way temporary traffic signals. However 3-way temporary signals will be required at the junction with Blagreaves Lane. Traffic signals will be manned during the peak hours so adjustments can be made as required, and to keep any disruption to a minimum.
Utility companies have carried out preparation works over the past few months. However, Severn Trent Water still have some minor changes to make and these are planned for the second week in July and will last three days.
Notices will be posted on site giving advance warning of the actual closure dates, and Whitehouse Construction will be able to provide local residents with more specific detail of the working areas once onsite
Councillor Asaf Afzal, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Public Protection said: “We will work hard to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum while the works take place, and I would like to thank residents and road users in advance for their patience. We are working to deliver a major improvement for the area that will assist road users long in to the future.”
The £531,000 improvement scheme is being funded by a Section 106 contribution from housing developers, with the remaining costs being met from the Council’s Highways and Transport capital programme.
