An exciting opportunity has been created, which will see six young people in Derby given the chance to work and train in the cycling industry through a new apprenticeship scheme.

A partnership between Cycle Derby and Park Bikeworks has created the initial opportunity to give two 18 to 24 year olds a chance to work towards an NVQ Level 2 and CYTECH Level 2 qualification. The main focus of the training will be on bike maintenance, which is a key aspect of the new cycle hub, but the apprentices will learn all aspects of cycling including designing, building, stocking, selling and maintenance.

Now, coinciding with National Apprenticeship Week, an additional four places have been created thanks to Moore Large & Co, Derby, who have ensured the capacity to create the additional apprenticeships. The company, like Cycle Derby and Park Bikeworks, are passionate about giving young people an opportunity to work within the cycling industry.

The apprentices will spend six months at Moore Large & Co and six months at Park Bikeworks, with mentoring throughout the year by Cycle Derby. They will be totally immersed in the cycling industry!

Mark Smith, Cycle Derby’s Education, Training & Promotions Co-ordinator said: “Cycle Derby is committed to getting more people cycling more often. This apprenticeship is a golden opportunity for any young person to start a career in the cycling industry.”

Advice and support has been offered by Job Centre Plus, who have helped to write the job specifications, introduced a learning provider (DBC in Derby) and organised the interviews.

Once recruited the apprentices will undertake work experience with Cycle Derby before starting their apprenticeships in April.

Councillor Asaf Afzal, cabinet member for planning, environment and public protection, added: “I am pleased that companies in Derby are creating unique opportunities for young people to gain skills and qualifications through apprenticeships. Cycling is a large part of Derby’s future especially in the coming months and this will ensure that we are creating a foundation of skilled people to develop the cycling industry within the city.”

This is a great opportunity for young people and it is hoped that it may become a continual apprenticeship scheme.
