Following on from the incredible World Record achievement of Derby cyclist Leigh Timmis crossing Europe on a bike, Cycle Derby recently teamed up with him to promote “individual potential” in schools across the city, and to inspire the next generation of riders.

Wyndham Primary Academy, Silverhill Primary, Village Primary Academy, Derby High School and St Peter’s C of E, were chosen to take part, and 300 pupils across Years five and six enjoyed listening to Leigh speak passionately about his adventures, inspiring the children to follow their dreams, be the best, and achieve their ambitions. The talk focussed on not only the world record but his seven year bike journey around the world.

At the same time, 400 children from reception and early year’s classes, took part in balance bike and learn to ride sessions with Cycle Derby, which resulted in an amazing 240 children learning to ride.

Councillor Alan Grimadell, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism said:

“I am delighted that the visits were so well received by all the schools involved, and it’s encouraging to hear that we now have over 200 new riders who prior to this exercise were on stabilisers! Ideally we would now like for schools to buy into our offer and spread the amazing achievements across the whole of the city.”

Cycle Derby hope to extend the offer to schools in the New Year, and inspire even more teachers and pupils to become more active, healthy and enjoy having fun on a bike.
